What Is An HND Programme?

01.31.2021 by Chieyine Nelson // Leave a Comment

In this article, we will be enlightening you on what HND stands for and what it comprises as a level of study.

HND stands for Higher National Diploma. A Higher National Diploma or HND is a higher level of education that is obtained and obtainable after a National Diploma (ND) or otherwise called an Ordinary National Diploma (OND). Thus, an ND certificate is needed for admission.

HND is not a Bachelor’s degree but can be converted to a bachelor’s degree in some select universities. And an HND holder can easily further his education by converting to a bachelor’s degree or doing a top-up course and continuing a master’s degree programme depending on your choice.

HND is more of a vocational qualification because HND courses are practical courses in different fields; as you are equipped with relevant skills related to your career rather than merely acquiring knowledge.

They are experimental, practical, and skill-based. Courses are taught in normal classrooms but assessments are accredited through field works, projects, presentations, and practical skills.

An HND course takes approximately two years to complete if it is taken as a full-time course, and three to four years to complete if it is taken as a part-time course.

This course is more valued and preferred in some companies and countries like the United Kingdom than a Bachelor’s degree because it is skilled-based and not mere knowledge and theory acquisition.

Some countries that offer this qualification include Nigeria, United Kingdom, Argentina, Brunei, India, Malta, Ghana, Kenya, and some other countries related to the British.
